These messages are the butt of late night jokes, but people still respond to them. The people behind these messages claim to be officials, businesspeople, or the surviving spouses of former government honchos in Nigeria or another country whose money is tied up temporarily. They offer to transfer lots of money into your bank account if you will pay the fees or “taxes” they need to get their money. If you respond to the initial offer, you may receive documents that look “official.

Oct 20, · Nigerian authorities, extremely sensitive about crime, say the scammers are mostly from other countries, and that any Nigerians who participate do .
Times Staff Writer Oct 20, Nigerians use computers in an Internet cafe in Lagos. Most recipients hit delete, delete, delete, delete without ever opening the messages that urge them to claim the untold riches of a long-lost deceased second cousin, and the messages that offer millions of dollars to help smuggle loot stolen by a corrupt Nigerian official into a U. But the few who actually reply make this a tempting and lucrative business for the boys of Festac, a neighborhood of Lagos at the center of the cyber-scam universe.
The targets are called maghas — scammer slang from a Yoruba word meaning fool, and refers to gullible white people. Samuel is 19, handsome, bright, well-dressed and ambitious. He has a special flair for computers. Until he quit the game last year, he was one of Festac’s best-known cyber-scam champions. Like nearly everyone here, he is desperate to escape the run-down, teeming streets, the grimy buildings, the broken refrigerators stacked outside, the strings of wet washing. It’s the kind of place where plainclothes police prowl the streets extorting bribes, where mobs burn thieves to death for stealing a cellphone, and where some people paint “This House Is Not For Sale” in big letters on their homes, in case someone posing as the owner tries to put it on the market.
It is where places like the Net Express cyber cafe thrive.

Nigeria is a pulsating powerhouse: as the most populous nation on the continent – nearly every fifth African is Nigerian – it dominates the region. Recently, though, the boom has shown a few signs of bust: the economy has been hit by the drop in crude oil prices.
From the web How this scam works The scammer will contact you out of the blue by email, letter, text message or through social media. Or they may tell you about a large inheritance that is ‘difficult to access’ because of government restrictions or taxes in their country. The scammer will then offer you a large sum of money to help them transfer their personal fortune out of the country. Scammers may ask for your bank account details to ‘help them transfer the money’ and use this information to later steal your funds.
Or they may ask you to pay fees, charges or taxes to ‘help release or transfer the money out of the country’ through your bank. These fees may even start out as quite small amounts. If paid, the scammer may make up new fees that require payment before you can receive your reward.

Nigerian man arrested in UK on Illinois fraud charges. FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, Ill. — A Nigerian national, who is wanted in Illinois for scamming women in the United States, was arrested in London Saturday as he attempted to board a flight to South Africa.
Some of the polymer notes printed by Securency. Michael Howard Mr Chapman made, or arranged for the payments to the official — who cannot be named due to a court order in the UK. Each of the bribes passed through a company called Swingaxle, incorporated in the Seychelles in on Mr Chapman’s instructions and of which he was the beneficial owner. In he told a bank he set up Swingaxle for “various side projects”, Mr McGuinness said, including oil contracts with “a Russian counterpart”. The Canadian company was registered as providing “general contracting and janitorial service”, Mr McGuinness said, and the bribe was described to the bank as “relating to a consultancy invoice”.
There was “no other credible explanation” for the payment to a company that ostensibly provided janitorial services. This time Mr Chapman’s defence was that he was reimbursing the man for “tipping drivers, buying meals and tipping for meals” on visits to Nigeria. However there was no evidence Mr Chapman had asked Securency to reimburse the money, which was another example of a corrupt payment, Mr McGuinness said.
The payment was invoiced to Securency as paying for cars, drivers and personal security personnel for staff in Nigeria — however the money again ended up with the Nigerian Mint official, described variously as a “loan account payment” and a “spare parts consignment”. Mr McGuinness said Mr Chapman met the man he was bribing several times, and reported the encounters to his superiors at Securency.
He said another man, former senior Securency executive David Ellery, would give evidence that there was pressure from the board of Securency in Australia to secure more orders for polymer. At head office, the bribe was discussed and referred to as “assisting in setting a positive mood”, Mr McGuinness said.

Nigerian Dating Scam – I’ve been there by Catherine Sheffield, UK I am a widow and after just over two years my friends told me to try internet dating. As I was in my 40’s I thought I would join a site for over plus dating which you pay a subscription for and I thought would be safe. I started chatting to a guy who said he was english born but his father was american.
He was working for the united nations as an orthapedic surgeon which I thought was a bit of a story but I went along with it. We were chatting for a few weeks and he suggested going onto messenger as it would save money on subscriptions. He told me things like he was also a widower and told me about his wife etc.
